November 2019 Question of the Month

Posted On:

“How do I talk to my employer about medicinal side effects?”

Several medications come with side effects that may impact your work performance. If this is the case for you, it’s best to be proactive. Approach your employer with an accommodation request. Let them know that you’re taking a medication. Tell then what side effects may be expected and work with them to find an accommodation that makes sense.

For example, if you know a medication you are taking will make you drowsy, it’s likely your employer won’t feel safe allowing you to operate heavy machinery. They may move you into a different role. You should also work with your doctor to find a medication schedule that works with your work schedule so you’re as well-rested on the job as you can be.
