Starkloff’s Youth Transition Coordinator Sarah Schwegel spoke with students at Trautwein Elementary School for Discovering Abilities Day on Friday, May 10. She made her way around the school from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., discussing career exploration, disability employment and living with disability among students in seven different classrooms, grades K–4.
They listened intently as Sarah asked them to think about how their life might be different if they had a disability, and what would happen if they could no longer perform their dream job. To illustrate, Sarah shared examples from her own life. She talked about how her career goals changed as she discovered the ways her disability impacted her.
One student, a third grader, said, “When I started today I wanted to be a professional athlete, but now I want to help people with disabilities!”
