Summary: Working Together: Deaf and Hearing People is an interactive, experiential workshop conducted by professionals from the National Technical Institute for the Deaf Center on Employment, in Rochester, NY. It helps create a workplace environment for deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing employees that encourages communication and helps foster all employees realizing their full potential.
SHRM and HRCI credits will be available for this course.
Through hands-on activities, group discussions and specially designed materials, the presenters establish a fun, comfortable and engaging atmosphere in which these topics are covered:
This training program is for supervisors and co-workers of deaf and hard of hearing employees, along with those employees. It is recommended that human resources staff and recruiters, and equal employment opportunity, diversity and disability hiring professionals also attend.
Presenters: National Technical Institute for the Deaf, Rochester, NY
As an Assistant Director at the Center on Employment at the Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf in Rochester, NY, Regina Kiperman-Kiselgof assists deaf and hard-of-hearing students with employment searches in fields such as Applied Computer Technology and Information Technology. She teaches courses related to job search processes, helps students develop their interviewing skills, advises them about employment trends and coaches them on finding co-op/internship opportunities. She also provides resources to alumni regarding employment and career advancement skills.
To keep current with developments in the field of employment, Kiperman-Kiselgof often participates and exhibits in conferences and expositions such as the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), the Society of Human Recourses Management Diversity & Inclusion (SHRM) and national organizations including the US Business Leadership Network (USBLN). She travels nationally to corporations, federal agencies, private sector businesses, profit and non-profit organizations and medium and small-sized companies where she conducts and facilitates discussions relating to an interactive workshop she presents for employers entitled “Working Together: Deaf and Hearing People.” This award-winning workshop fosters deaf awareness for employers and employees, and provides strategies for deaf/hard of hearing and hearing colleagues to work together successfully. She also provides information on various types of reasonable workplace accommodations for deaf and hard-of-hearing employees.
Ms. Kiperman-Kiselgof holds a BS degree in Social Work and an MS degree in Career and Human Resources Development from RIT. Prior to joining the NTID Center on Employment, she worked for the Postsecondary Education Programs Network (PEPNet) at RIT/NTID where she coordinated various projects. She provided training and lectures related to accommodating individuals who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, developed training materials and marketing tools and provided technical assistance and disseminated PEPNet resources to universities and colleges in the United States. She also enjoys teaching courses American Sign Language (ASL) and Russian Sign Language (RSL) classes. She moved from the Ukraine in 1994 and now lives in Rochester, NY with her husband, Dmitriy Kiselgof and two daughters.
As the Associate Director of the Center on Employment at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY, Dawn provides instruction and advisement to deaf and hard-of-hearing students and alumni on employment and career advancement skills and has served as NTID’s federal Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP) coordinator. She has provided consultation and training to numerous employer organizations nationwide on recruitment, communication and accommodation strategies related to working with deaf and hard-of-hearing employees and has conducted presentations to Vocational Rehabilitation and Disability Employment Development staff on employment development strategies for people with disabilities including the national State Coordinators for the Deaf (SCD) conference. She has regularly participated in conferences of national organizations including the US Business Leadership Network (USBLN), the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) and events of the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD). In addition, Dawn regularly participates in the initiatives of career development associations such as the Rochester Area and Western NY Career Development Associations and has been featured as a guest expert on New Jersey radio talk show; “The World of Work” and the Job Accommodation Network (JAN) webinar series. Ms. Lucas holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management and Marketing from Nazareth College of Rochester, NY. Her professional experience, prior to joining NTID, includes positions held in account and operations management, marketing, and human resources with Citi Financial Services and Concentrix Corporation in Rochester, NY.

Individuals with disabilities can help employers gain a strategic advantage in a rapidly changing economy. As the workforce ages, companies will need to tap into previously untapped talent pools to meet demand. Individuals with disabilities represent one of the largest of these pools. Now more than ever, students with disabilities are pursuing higher education, work experience programs, internships, and more. This roundtable discussion examines where and how to tap into this pool of talent. Participants will share strategies and best practices on strategic partnerships, marketing, technology, programming, and more.

Title: How to create a welcoming workplace for employees with disabilities.
Creating and maintaining a diverse and inclusive work environment requires sincere commitment from all levels of the organization. This commitment starts with the highest levels of leadership including top executives, their leadership teams, and the boards of directors. Communicating this goal of inclusion and diversity to employees at all levels and including what they can do to help is extremely important. Accessibility is key to fostering an environment of inclusion. This means not only removing physical barriers by providing such things as wheelchair ramps, Braille signage, and accessible restrooms, but also providing removing digital barriers by ensuring information and communication technology is accessible to all and/or compatible with assistive software and devices. Accessibility also has an attitudinal dimension. Doors must be open, both literally and figuratively, to all qualified individuals including those with disabilities. Fostering such an environment will help increase productivity, ensure a wider pool of talent, and expand potential the customer base. This session focuses on the importance of commitment and communication from leadership, and removal of physical, technological, and attitudinal barriers to create a fully inclusive culture.

Title: How to welcome a team member with a disability.
Ensuring a new team member with a disability gets off to a strong start is very important. This roundtable discussion will examine how your company can prepare to welcome a new team member. Do you have policies and procedures in place that help guide you through the onboarding and accommodations process? Is the new employee’s future team prepared to meet and work with him or her? Will you be able to evaluate, retain and promote this individual? This session addresses these issues that all add up to creating a welcoming environment in which a new employee can thrive.

Title: Best practices in interviewing a person with a disability.
The value of the job interview in the hiring process is obvious. It allows employers a chance to identify those who possess the best combination of knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position. This roundtable discussion provides information on the best strategies for ensuring the maximum benefit from interviewing a person with a disability. Topics covered include the dos and don’ts, job analysis, and how to prepare for and conduct a meaningful interview.
